About the Society

The Swedish Archaeological Society was formed on May 5, 1947. The purpose was to establish an archaeological association that would unite professionally active representatives of the various branches of archeological science.

In recent years, the community has succeeded in the purpose of uniting active archaeologists in a community, which has become a natural continuation of the activities of the various university seminars for the professionals in the subject.

The society is today the organization where Swedish archaeologists can collaborate at seminars, theme evenings and lectures. Its operations have previously been linked to Stockholm, but an effort is being made to broaden this to other parts of the country as well.

The community also arranges archeological themed trips both within the country and abroad for its members. The Swedish Archaeological Society publishes the member magazine Gjallarhornet and the English-language journal Current Swedish Archeology.
